About this task

Narayanganj’s crowded neighbourhoods and factory areas fill their drains fast. Opening one blocked drain by a market, a neighbourhood or a school before the rains. The team first tells the shopkeepers and residents, then in one day lifts the covers, takes out the plastic, polythene and silt in sacks, and sends it by municipal truck or van to the proper dump. Last, before and after photos from the same spot.

Why it matters

In our towns, knee-deep water after rain comes mostly from drains blocked by polythene and waste. Standing water breeds Aedes mosquitoes, ruins shop goods and keeps children from school. One drain opened saves a whole lane.

What changes after

After rain the water goes within the hour; the shopkeepers promise not to throw waste in; the municipality puts the spot on its regular round.

Who can join

Anyone over 16. It is physical work; those who cannot lift can tell the neighbours, take the photos, or bring water and food.

Step by step

  1. 1

Tell the shopkeepers and residents60 min

Say when the work will be, ask them not to throw waste in, and ask for one local person to join.

What can go wrong, and what to do

  • Broken glass, needles or blades → Never by hand; lift with the spade into a hard bottle. If cut, wash and bandage; if deep, go to the health centre.
  • The waste truck did not come → Send it by the van you lined up; never leave sacks by the road.
  • The drain is deep or smells of gas → Do not climb in. Do what you can from the edge and report the rest to the municipality.
  • It rains → Stop, cover the sacks; keep everyone away from slippery open covers.

Useful numbers

Questions people ask

Do we need the municipality’s permission?
Cleaning a drain usually needs no permission, but tell the ward councillor’s office. They often send the waste truck.
Where does the waste go?
Never left by the road: the rain washes it back. To the municipal dump or onto their truck.
Can I join if I cannot stay the whole time?
Yes. Say in your request which step or which hours you can do. The lead will give that step to you.
