About this task

Narayanganj’s crowded neighbourhoods and factory areas fill their drains fast. Opening one blocked drain by a market, a neighbourhood or a school before the rains. The team first tells the shopkeepers and residents, then in one day lifts the covers, takes out the plastic, polythene and silt in sacks, and sends it by municipal truck or van to the proper dump. Last, before and after photos from the same spot.

Why it matters

In our towns, knee-deep water after rain comes mostly from drains blocked by polythene and waste. Standing water breeds Aedes mosquitoes, ruins shop goods and keeps children from school. One drain opened saves a whole lane.

What changes after

After rain the water goes within the hour; the shopkeepers promise not to throw waste in; the municipality puts the spot on its regular round.

Who can join

Anyone over 16. It is physical work; those who cannot lift can tell the neighbours, take the photos, or bring water and food.

Getting ready, step by step

  1. 7 days before

    • Walk the drain: how long, where the covers are, where it is most blocked.
    • Give the letter to the ward councillor's office and ask for the waste truck.
    • Take the before photos.
  2. 3 days before

    • Tell the shopkeepers and residents in person; ask them to keep goods off the drain on the day.
    • Buy gloves, masks and sacks; see if spades can be borrowed.
    • Fix the time and fare with a van puller.
  3. The day before

    • Remind the team of time, place and clothes (old clothes, closed shoes).
    • Confirm again that the municipal truck is coming.
  4. On the day

    • Start with a safety talk; nothing sharp by hand.
    • Move every sack the same day; leave none on the road.
    • Take the after photos from the same spot.
  5. The week after

    • After the first rain, check the water drains away; add a photo.
    • Agree a proper waste spot with the shopkeepers.

Who does what

  • Lead1

Talks to the authority and shopkeepers; keeps the day on time.

  • Lifting team3

Opens covers, lifts waste with spades into sacks.

  • Sacks and van1

Ties full sacks, loads the van or truck, counts how many left.

  • Photos and water1

Before and after photos, the team's water and the first-aid box.

Whom to speak to first

  • Ward councillor's office or union council

    Why
They control the waste truck and the dump.
    How
A written letter a week ahead; keep the received copy.
  • Market committee or shop owners' group

    Why
The work is in front of their shops; without them the drain fills again.
    How
Speak in person with the president or secretary; ask for one person to join.
  • Municipal cleaning supervisor

    Why
Knows which covers are safe to lift and where the waste goes.
    How
Ask for him through the councillor's office.

The day, hour by hour

  1. 07:00Gather, put on gloves and masks, safety talk.
  2. 07:20Before photos; lift covers; keep children and walkers back.
  3. 07:30Start lifting from the upstream end, into sacks.
  4. 09:30Water and rest; change masks.
  5. 09:45Clear the rest; gather the full sacks in one place.
  6. 11:30Load the sacks onto the truck or van to the proper dump.
  7. 12:15Put the covers back; pour a bucket of water and watch it flow.
  8. 12:30After photos, wash with soap, done.

How to take the proof

  • Take before and after from the same spot, facing the same way.
  • Keep a shop sign or landmark in one photo so the place is clear.
  • A photo of the full sacks going onto the truck.
  • If you can, a 10-second video of water flowing.

Common first-time mistakes

  • Leaving the waste beside the drain; the first rain washes it back.
  • Starting downstream; waste from upstream blocks it again.
  • Starting without telling the shopkeepers.
  • Buying too few gloves, so someone works bare-handed.

What can go wrong, and what to do

  • Broken glass, needles or blades

Never by hand; lift with the spade into a hard bottle. If cut, wash and bandage; if deep, go to the health centre.

  • The waste truck did not come

Send it by the van you lined up; never leave sacks by the road.

  • The drain is deep or smells of gas

Do not climb in. Do what you can from the edge and report the rest to the municipality.

  • It rains

Stop, cover the sacks; keep everyone away from slippery open covers.

Questions people ask

Do we need the municipality’s permission?

Cleaning a drain usually needs no permission, but tell the ward councillor’s office. They often send the waste truck.

Where does the waste go?

Never left by the road: the rain washes it back. To the municipal dump or onto their truck.

Can I join if I cannot stay the whole time?

Yes. Say in your request which step or which hours you can do. The lead will give that step to you.
