Never share your OTP

Banks, mobile banking services and mobile operators never phone to ask for a PIN or OTP. Anyone who asks is a scammer.

13 October 2026

An OTP is a one-time secret number sent by message that opens an account. Scammers call saying “money went to you by mistake”, “your account will be closed” or “you have won a prize”, then ask for the OTP or PIN. Give it, and the account can be emptied. Three rules. No OTP, PIN or password to anyone, even if they ask in a relative’s name. Pressure to hurry means suspicion. Hang up and check by calling the organisation’s own helpline, or family on a number you know. If you gave it by mistake, do not wait: call your bank’s or mobile banking helpline at once and ask them to block the account, then tell the nearest police station.
