Diarrhoea rises in the hot season and in floods. Oral saline replaces the water and salts the body loses, but made wrongly it does not work, and too much salt can harm a child. Many families add water by guesswork, or split a packet to make small amounts. How to help: learn the packet’s instructions properly yourself, then show them in the neighbourhood, at courtyard meetings or at school: wash your hands, use a clean vessel, dissolve the whole packet in exactly the amount of safe or boiled-and-cooled water the packet states, and give it a little at a time. Share the danger signs too: blood in the stool, repeated vomiting, great weakness or drowsiness, or passing little urine mean going to hospital without delay.
