In many schools the library shelves are nearly empty, or hold a few old, torn books. Without the chance to read beyond their textbooks, children never grow the joy of reading or the wish to know more. How to help: gather storybooks, rhymes, children’s science, history and geography books, dictionaries and maps in good condition at home, talk to the head teacher of a nearby school, and hand them over. You can keep a book collection box in the neighbourhood or at the office. Books should suit the children’s age; nothing torn or unsuitable. If you can, spend a day a month at the school reading with the children too.
