Respect the queue

Jumping the queue at a hospital, bank, bus stand or ticket counter wastes everyone’s time and starts quarrels. Wait your turn, and let older, pregnant and disabled people go first.

13 October 2026

A queue means equal respect for all: whoever came first is served first. When someone pushes in or pulls rank, everyone behind waits longer, and in a crowd the shoving can hurt older people and children. Three habits. Wait your turn calmly, and do not get someone you know to push your work ahead. Let older people, pregnant women, mothers holding babies and disabled people go first. If someone jumps the queue, no quarrel; say politely, “The queue is this way.” Getting on a bus or train too, let people off first, then board in line.
