In a fire, smoke and panic make people lose their way. Children who have practised once know which door, which stairs, and where to go and stand.
The idea: at least once a year, a fire drill with the school. When the bell rings, each class follows its teacher in a line, walking not running, by a set route to the playground, where the roll is taken. No lifts. Low down if there is smoke.
Asked, the nearest fire station often comes to show a drill. The Fire Service number is 16163, and 999 in an emergency; write both on the school wall.
