Many grown-ups cannot read a letter, sign their own name or read the label on a medicine, and are ashamed to say so. So they press a thumbprint on papers without knowing what they say.
The idea: two evenings a week for an hour, in a schoolroom or club room, a few volunteers teach adults: the letters, writing and signing their own name, reading numbers, the names on buses and the writing on medicines. Separate classes for women and men if people prefer.
One rule: nobody laughs at anybody. Everyone learns at their own pace.
