Outside schools, jhalmuri, fuchka, sherbet and cut fruit are sold, and children eat them every day. Flies and dust settle on uncovered food, and a sherbet made with unsafe water can upset the stomach.
The idea: parents and teachers talk to the sellers together, with respect, not blame. A few simple points: keep food covered, use safe water for drinks and for washing plates, wash hands with soap, and do not wrap food in printed paper.
The neighbourhood can chip in for covered containers or a water jar. The seller’s living and the children’s health are both protected.
