Elders' stories in their grandchildren's notebooks
শিউলি মারমা Desher Kaj team · 30 September 2026
Elders in hill neighbourhoods hold many stories of their own language, folktales, jhum farming and festivals. Most are written nowhere, so they are lost when the elders pass away.
On holidays, school-going children take turns to sit with grandparents. They note down stories, songs and sayings in a notebook. At the end, everyone reads it aloud at a neighbourhood gathering. If you wish, children can add drawings and make a small book.
You need some notebooks, pens, the children's interest and the elders' time. Do get the families' consent.
