Say no to polythene

Take a cloth or jute bag to market and turn down polythene at the shop. One bag serves again and again.

13 October 2026

Polythene does not break down. It blocks drains so water stands in the monsoon, piles up in rivers and canals, and gives off toxic smoke when burned. Bangladesh banned polythene shopping bags back in 2002, but a law alone does little unless habits change. An easy habit: keep the market bag by the door or on the bicycle or motorbike. Take a washable box or bowl for fish and meat. When a shopkeeper offers polythene, politely say, “No need.” Reuse the polythene already at home, then put it where the rubbish goes. Never burn it.
