Wash your hands with soap before eating
Water alone does not remove the germs on your hands. Before eating, after the toilet and before feeding a child, scrub with soap for at least 20 seconds.
13 October 2026

The germs of diarrhoea, typhoid, jaundice and many stomach illnesses travel from hands to the mouth with food. Washed in water alone, hands look clean but the germs stay; it takes soap.
The right way: wet your hands, take soap, and scrub the palms, backs, between the fingers and under the nails for at least 20 seconds, then rinse and dry on a clean cloth or in the air. When: before eating, before cooking and serving food, before feeding a child, after the toilet, after cleaning a child’s bottom, and after sneezing or coughing.
With no basin, fit a tap to a bottle or bucket, hang a bar of soap beside it, and make a handwashing spot right by the house. Children learn by watching grown-ups.
